Are you new to padel and feeling a little overwhelmed by all the terminology being thrown around? Don’t worry, it’s perfectly normal. Padel has its own set of unique words and phrases that can be confusing for beginners. That’s why we’ve put together a list of common padel terms you need to know to help you feel more confident on the court.
1. Padel
Let’s start with the basics – padel itself! Padel is a racquet sport played between two pairs, similar to tennis. However, the court is smaller and surrounded by walls, making for a faster-paced, more dynamic game.
2. Walls
The walls are an integral part of padel. The court is enclosed by four walls, which can be used to hit the ball in play. A well-placed shot off the wall can surprise your opponents and give you an advantage.
3. Lob
A lob is a shot where the ball is hit high and deep into the opponent’s court. It’s a useful shot when your opponents are too close to the net, giving you the opportunity to move them back and gain control of the point.
4. Smash
The smash is a powerful overhead shot usually hit from near the net. It’s a great way to finish off a point and is often used in response to a weak lob or high bouncing ball.
5. Serve
The serve is the shot that starts the point. It’s important to get the serve right, as it can set the tone for the rest of the point. A good serve should be accurate and have enough speed to make it difficult for your opponent to return.
6. Drop shot
The drop shot is a shot where the ball is hit lightly over the net, landing just over the opponent’s side. It’s a great way to catch your opponents off guard and can be used to change the pace of the game.
7. Slice
A slice is a type of shot where the ball is hit with a downward motion, causing it to spin and bounce low. It’s a useful shot for keeping the ball low and forcing your opponents to hit up, giving you an opportunity to attack.
8. Volley
A volley is a shot where the ball is hit before it bounces on your side of the court. It’s a quick, reflex shot that’s often used in response to a weak return or lob.
9. Cross-court
A cross-court shot is when the ball is hit diagonally across the court. It’s a great way to get around your opponents and create an opening to attack.
10. Match point
Match point is the point that, if won, will result in winning the match. It’s the final point of the game and can be a tense and exciting moment.
Now that you are familiar with these basic padel terms, you’ll be able to better understand the game and communicate with other players. Keep practicing and learning, and soon enough you’ll be speaking padel like a pro!
